The Best Buy Children's Foundation strengthens communities through national and local grant making programs. Best Buy has assembled teams across the country to determine grant recipients in their community. Community Grants are awarded to area non-profit organizations in the team's community that provide positive experiences to help teens excel in school and development with life and leadership skills. The selected non-profit organization must be located within 50 miles of the Best Buy store so that the particular store is aiding an organization in its community. Each Best Buy store is also given a discretion for store donations of products and gift cards to organizations in their communities.
All of the efforts of @15 are supported from The Best Buy Children's Foundation. First up is the @15 Scholarships, which focuses on teens and helping them thrive. This $1000 scholarship helps students prepare for a brighter future by providing a college scholarship. Recently, Best Buy altered the criteria of the scholarship recipients. The scholarship will now be awarded to someone in grades 9-12 who is active in his or her community, has strong academics and has work experience. There is other criteria for the scholarship as well, but those are the three major components that are looked at.
Best Buy also has two other programs associated with @15, the @15 Exchange and the Teach @15 Awards. The @15 Exchange has a $1 million discretion and allows teens to choose where the money goes. Best Buy wants the voices of teens to be heard and the company wants teens to feel empowered with the choices of who this money helps and how the money helps. The Teach @15 Awards is also a way for teens voices to be hear. At15 members can nominate their school for why they are in need of certain technology and equipment in the classroom to make their schooling experience the best it can be. The following video is of a Teach @15 Award recipient in Florida. Best Buy Mobile partnered with The GRAMMY Foundation and, with the help of teen pop sensation Justin Bieber, presented Seminole High School with $5000 for its talented music program.
The students not only saw Justin as some heartthrob singer, but as a talented musician who is a teen just like them.
When it comes to community relations, Best Buy's main focus is empowering teens to make decisions that affect them and make them a stronger individual. While Best Buy does not have an official mission statement, their company is about better solving the unmet needs of its customers and that is exactly what the company is going with their community relations programs. While all of the programs provide a lot of aid and empowerment to teens, the company is very quiet about it. I had to do a lot of clicking and digging for information about the programs, with some of the pages being restricted to @15 members. If Best Buy were to more heavily promote its services to teens, perhaps there would be a further drive from teens to be mactive in their communities.
